Chapter 14

From the look in Sebastian’s eyes, I knew I wasn’t going to like the terms of the deal, which meant Gideon was going to hate them.

“What are the terms?” Gideon asked, his voice low, dangerous.

“You have to bring Esther along.”

“It’s a risk to take her out in the field, but not an unreasonable one,” Amiah said. “Especially if you’re just going to buy a master ward, even if that master ward is rare and powerful.”

I had to agree, which meant, given Sebastian’s expression, there had to be a catch.

“Bane doesn’t always do business with the nicest people,” Gideon said.

“I’m aware,” Amiah huffed.

Sebastian flashed his wicked smile. “And yet you still do business with me.”

Gideon glared at him. “The terms.”

“You’re meeting Voth at his office right now. The price is half a million, cash, non-negotiable, and yes, I’m willing to loan you the money until you have time to transfer it back to me. He also wants to see, and I quote, the mated couple for himself. Also non-negotiable.” Sebastian looked at me and his smile turned apologetic. “There are disadvantages to being rare. And just wait until people realize you’ve got two brands.”

That made my insides squirm. Even if I no longer needed to fly under the radar, that didn’t mean I’d lost the urge to do so. Except we didn’t have time for me and Jacob to get long-sleeved shirts — and that would look weird with the summer’s heat — so there wasn’t any way for me to hide Jacob’s brand. But if getting gawked at and talked about meant I could stop those witches, so be it. “So we go, pick up the master ward, and get the shaman. Back within the hour.”

“I’m not taking you to a hotel for supers owned by a greater demon. Especially one who reveled in his war assignment to take out as many nephilim as possible. Any way possible. Not with your essence unreadable and your eyes glowing.” The room’s temperature dropped a few degrees, Gideon’s fear strong enough to bleed past the containment cuffs. “They’ll think you’re a nephilim.”

“And tonight he’s got that big fight,” Sebastian said. “Smaller fights all afternoon leading up to the big bout.”

“So even though it’s the middle of the afternoon, the hotel will be packed.” Gideon shook his head. “No way.”

“At least he’s banned all media and you won’t get caught on TV,” Sebastian said.

“No,” Gideon snapped, his voice sharp, whatever control he had over his emotions starting to crumble.

“We don’t have much choice.” If we didn’t get the master ward, the witches would win, except— “Will the area containment master ward even shut the witches off from their power?”

“Nothing in or out, not even worship magic. The witches will still have access to their personal magic inside the contained area,” Sebastian said, “it’s not like the handcuffs, but it does create a barrier impenetrable by magic.”

“Essie isn’t going. I won’t— I can’t—” Gideon’s breath picked up. “What if we paid double? What if—” Gideon pulled the marble with my light magic out of his pocket.
